Teatro La Fenice

The Phoenix Opera House

Opera house, faithfully rebuilt in modern times to match its original 1800s style.

What makes it special

The prophecy of its name

The name La Fenice (The Phoenix) was chosen long before the two fires that would later define its fate. It was originally a nod to its 'rebirth' after legal disputes surrounding its construction in the late 1700s. Yet the name proved prophetic: twice the theatre was reduced to ashes, and twice it rose again, most recently in 2003 with a faithful reconstruction of its original design.

Shaping opera history

Many of the world’s most beloved operas had their premieres here, a legacy that has made this theatre one of the most iconic and celebrated stages in music history.

Exquisite architecture and acoustics

Beyond its neoclassical grandeur and lavish interiors, La Fenice is famous for acoustics so precise that every delicate vocal nuance reaches every seat in the house.

During the day

Visits are possible daily, generally from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m..

We recommend grabbing the included audio guide, available as a smartphone download or for rent on-site with an ID.

It’s a great way to catch all the details and uncover the theatre's incredible history.

During a performance

Of course, to truly immerse yourself in the theatre’s atmosphere — and especially its exquisite acoustics — a night at the opera is a must.

Be sure to note the dress code in advance.

Check the calendar of events to see the many performances throughout the year, some of which take place at Teatro Malibran as well.

How to dress for live performances

For opening and première nights, formal attire is recommended.

For other shows, smart casual works perfectly.

Just a heads-up: shorts, sleeveless tops, and overly casual clothing aren’t allowed, and tickets can’t be refunded in those cases.

The best seat in the house

La Fenice : Extremely lush and featuring mirrors that create the illusion of endless space, the royal box was first created under Napoleon’s orders by merging six standard boxes into this special one

Tucked away in the audioguide is the royal box’s incredible story — a place of honor with a tormented past, intertwined not only with the opera house’s own history but also with the political and historic events of Venice itself.

This large and luxurious box was not part of La Fenice’s original design, which featured only boxes of equal size. Soon after the theatre’s completion, Venice lost its independence to Napoleon’s French Empire, and the emperor ordered the demolition of three central boxes on both the second and third tiers (six in total) to create an imperial box for himself.

Almost 50 years later, after an insurrection and the short-lived Republic of Venice’s declaration of independence from Austria, the loggia was dismantled and the original tiers of boxes were reinstated in what became known as the 'Republican' house.

But the independence was brief: the Imperial Austrian Royal Government returned the following year and ordered the loggia rebuilt, this time to an even richer design.

In 1866, when Veneto joined the Kingdom of Italy, the imperial loggia became the royal box. The symbol of the Italian royal family can still be seen inside, reproduced on the side walls.
