What makes it special

Venetian Baroque extravagance

Commissioned by the Barbaro family, the remarkable facade is a proud celebration of their maritime and political triumphs, adorned with reliefs of galleys, battle scenes, statues, and:

Distinct relief maps

At the very base of the facade are six marble relief city plans, where you can easily recognize the buildings of Rome, along with other cities under Venetian influence: Padua, Zadar, Split, Corfu and Heraklion.

Ceiling

The nave ceiling features three large canvases portraying significant events in the life of the Virgin Mary: her birth, coronation and assumption.

Rubens in Venice

Tucked away in the modest treasury is the only canvas by Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens in Venice. His 'Madonna and Child' bears the artist’s unmistakable signature: a tender, cherubic baby Jesus.

Santa Maria del Giglio : The focal point of the modest treasury is the depiction of 'Madonna and Child' by Flemish artist Paul Rubens, showcasing his trademark style with a cherubic baby Jesus

San Moise : The facade is deemed the most embellished in the city, with some Venetians finding it hideous, earning it a 'love to hate' reputation

If the church’s facade left you impressed and craving more of the same dramatic flair, look no further than the nearby San Moise.

Its extravagant Baroque facade famously divided opinion in Venice — some admire its grandeur, others find it just a bit too much.
