Leonardo's unusual handwriting

The manuscripts on display are handwritten backwards, from right to left, in what is called 'mirror writing'.

Since Leonardo wrote with his left hand, this was probably easier for him.

Which Leonardo museum to visit?

Venice has two museums dedicated to Da Vinci — the other is in San Barnaba.

Ideally, visit both! They each highlight different sides of Da Vinci’s genius.

Okay, so it has to be just one, you say?

Both are highly interactive and cost the same to enter.

Go for this one if you prefer a more structured museum experience — complete with digitized paintings, and overall a more modern setup.

Choose San Barnaba instead if you’re intrigued by a museum set in a former church and prefer a more informal layout — an open space packed with a huge number of contraptions.
