What makes this place special
A Gothic Giant
It absolutely dominates the skyline west of the Grand Canal. Step inside, and the narrow alleys outside suddenly feel a world away, replaced by an extraordinary sense of space and calm.
Final resting place
The church is the final resting place of several Doges and renowned artists from different eras, including the painter Titian and the sculptor Antonio Canova.
Monumental tomb
Antonio Canova's striking pyramidal tomb, rich with symbolic detail, quietly commands attention. Nearby, Doge Giovanni Pesaro's haunting Baroque monument leaves a lasting impression: its four towering moors supporting allegorical figures create a spectacle that feels both powerful and unsettling.
Masterpieces on every altar
The church's 17 altars are adorned with masterpieces like Titian's Assumption of the Virgin and Bellini's Frari Triptych.
The monks' choir
At the center of the basilica stands a unique Renaissance choir made of dark carved wood. The intricate carvings on its 124 stalls portray scenes of an 'ideal city' as envisioned during the Renaissance.

The symbolism of Canova's tomb
Originally designed by Canova as a funerary monument for the Renaissance painter Titian, who is buried in the basilica, the work took on a different meaning after Canova's death in 1822.
His pupils completed the work as a tribute to their master, placing his heart inside the pyramidal structure.
The tomb is filled with symbolic figures that invite closer attention: a torch-bearing figure following Death suggests the hope of immortality, while a winged angel stands as a quiet guardian.
Other sculptures represent hope, faith and renewal, including two women carrying a wreath of flowers and children holding burning torches. The sleeping winged lion resting in silence is a powerful symbol of strength, wisdom and justice.
If this monument sparks your interest in Canova, don't stop here. You can admire several of his early marble masterpieces at Museo Correr, and continue your journey at the Accademia Galleries, where more of his works can be found in Sala 7 and Sala 10.
More of Titian
If Titian's Assumption of the Virgin in Frari Basilica leaves an impression, continue your journey through Venice and discover more of his masterpieces.
Widely considered one of the greatest painters of the Venetian Renaissance, Tiziano Vecellio continued creating art throughout his long life, until his death at almost 100 years old.
While Titian's masterpieces can be found across Venice, few places reveal his style and artistic evolution as intimately as the Sacristy of Santa Maria della Salute.
Here, you can admire one of his early works, St. Mark Enthroned, which already hints at the mastery that would define his career.
Above it, the ceiling presents a powerful trio of biblical scenes: The Sacrifice of Isaac, Cain and Abel, and David and Goliath.
Look closely at the figures: their muscular forms, dramatic movement and emotional intensity reveal the influence of Michelangelo, whom Titian deeply admired.
Another Venetian Gothic giant
Cross the Rialto Bridge and discover another extraordinary Gothic church rising above Venice's rooftops: Santi Giovanni e Paolo (San Zanipolo).
Like Frari, its immense interior is filled with masterpieces, impressive tombs and centuries of Venetian history.
With fewer crowds and unique Gothic Murano glass windows, San Zanipolo offers another chance to experience the grandeur of Venice beyond the usual sights.
