The church is the final resting place of several Doges and renowned artists from different eras, including the painter Titian and the sculptor Antonio Canova.

The monks' choir

At the center of the basilica stands a unique Renaissance choir made of dark carved wood. The intricate carvings on its 124 stalls portray scenes of an 'ideal city' as envisioned during the Renaissance.

The symbolism of Canova's tomb

Originally designed by Canova as a funerary monument for the Renaissance painter Titian, who is buried in the basilica, the work took on a different meaning after Canova's death in 1822.

His pupils completed the work as a tribute to their master, placing his heart inside the pyramidal structure.

The tomb is filled with symbolic figures that invite closer attention: a torch-bearing figure following Death suggests the hope of immortality, while a winged angel stands as a quiet guardian.

Other sculptures represent hope, faith and renewal, including two women carrying a wreath of flowers and children holding burning torches. The sleeping winged lion resting in silence is a powerful symbol of strength, wisdom and justice.
